PICNIC IN THE PARK (20th June 2004)

Sunday afternoon, June 20th, 'Picnic In The Park', Queen's Park, Bournemouth. "Bring a picnic, balls and kite for a family day out with LIVE MUSIC, displays, games and rides from 1pm to 5.30pm." Free admission !!!
If you weren't there you really missed out. The live music was in the form of "Alliance". Eccentric bass playing frontman, Martin Kitcher, was as eccentric as ever. The four piece band played a brilliant selection of covers with amazing expertise and looked like they enjoyed every minute of the show. And so did I and the rest of the crowd. Rain? What rain?

PUNCH & JUDY (20th June 2004)

Sunday afternoon, June 20th, "Den Of Thieves" @ The Punch & Judy, Bournemouth, 3pm - 5pm. Another example of "where were you?". A small but enthusiastic crowd witnessed a fine performance from Carl, Martin, Ollie and Hugh (depping on harp). A cosy little venue with excellent acoustics and a good range of ales. Be there next Sunday afternoon.

ACID JAZZ AT O'NEILL'S (19th June 2004)

Recommended Gig - Acid Jazzers, Breeze @ O'Neill's, Bournemouth, Saturday (June 19th).
Bournemouth's finest original band at Bournemouth's finest Saturday night live music venue. Breeze's influences are many - Santana-ish latin-rock, reggae, funk, acid jazz, you name it. "Jungle Fever" is probably the absolute highspot of the set - a never failing dancefloor filler. And no doubt about it, the dancefloor was filled to bursting point on Saturday night. ROLLING DRUNKS - RARE APPEARENCE (19thJune 2004)

The notorious "Rolling Drunks", inventors of punk-blues,
at Mr. Kyp's, Parkstone, Saturday, June 19th.
Support from the unstoppable (?) Renegade.

STRATOCASTER WIZZ-KID GOES UNPLUGGED (18th June 2004)

Where were you when Scott McKeon played at The Green Room? Wherever you were you missed out on something pretty remarkable. Anyway, Scott's bass player couldn't make it to this gig at such short notice, so Scott and drummer, Ben, played as a two-piece. The amazing thing was that Ben switched from drums to acoustic guitar seemingly effortlessly and proved that he, just like Scott, is an inspired and accomplished guitarist. The result was and evening of acoustic, back to the roots, blues of the highest quality. The set consisted of a mix of covers and originals played with amazing spontaneity. These two guys could each wipe the floor with many a so called blues player more than twice their age, no names mentioned. No distortion, just undeniable talent.

IS THERE ANY LIFE ON PLANET EARTH? (June 2004)

Bazuzu, playing covers, at Winton Liberal Club, the venue that inspired the song
"Is There Any Life On Planet Earth?" apparently, on Sunday, June 13th. Strange but true! The venue lived up to its reputation, that's for sure. And the sour tasting icing on the cake - England lost to France in Euro 2004. I don't know about life on Planet Earth but there certainly wasn't a lot of dancing on the dancefloor.

SPECIAL GIG, THIS SATURDAY, JUNE 12th (June 2004)

Here's a top priority e-mail from Pieman of 'The Miss High 5s' -

Evening all,
BOURNEMOUTH GIG AHOY! Yes, we're playing The Green Room at The Portman (Ashley Road, Boscombe) THIS SATURDAY. It's the Green Room so it's free to get in and it starts at 9pm. However, it's going to be a special gig. Sarah can't get down for drumming due to Uni exams so Ollie will be taking to the stool an demonstrating why he's going to drum university next year! We'll also be playing with Prime Audio Soup, new hotshots from Ringwood. Any questions just wing us an email! And if this is in your trash folder, sort it out and make sure we get put in your proper inbox! Man, hotmail can suck sometimes.
Tell your friends - it's FREE!!! That = entertainment AND more money for beer.
Pieman.

JUJU MEN ON THE BEACH (June 2004)

Well, not literally on the beach, but pretty damn close. Last Sunday, June 6th, from 5pm to 7.30pm, retro r'n'b merchants, The Juju Men played at The Shell Bay Seafood Restaurant. The weather was perfect, the venue was perfect and the band were perfect, give or take a few bum notes. In the words of Lou Reed, it turned out to be nothing less than a "perfect day". Absolutely unforgettable.

GOOD VIBRATIONS IN CYBERSPACE (June 2004)

Hidden Radio - highly recommended internet radio station - a complete spectrum of alternative music - playlist updated weekly - if you are an alternative band, submit your song !!!

BOURNEMOUTH LIVE MUSIC FESTIVAL (June 2004)

Bazuzu, enjoyed playing in the Bournemouth Live Music Festival last year, 2003. Sadly, we won't be taking part this year due to a new compulsory condition that every band taking part must have public liabilty insurance. I suspect most of Bournemouth's interesting alternative bands will be facing the same problem. Such is life.

SUNDAY AFTERNOONS - WHAT'S GOING ON? (June 2004)

Plenty is going on, musically speaking, on Sunday afternoons. In Poole there is now a regular mid-afternoon session at the "Lord Nelson" on Poole Quay, In Bournemouth, the "Punch & Judy" near The Triangle has just started to offer music on Sunday afternoons, and this Sunday, June 6th,
The Juju Men will be playing at the "Shell Bay Seafood Restaurant" adjacent to the ferry landing point. So, get out of your lazy bed!

FUNHOUSE @ THE WATER'S EDGE (May 2004)

Funhouse, comprising Carl Chamberlain (guitar & Vocals), Al Palmer (bass guitar) and Bob Mace (drums), played a cracking gig at The Water's Edge in Poole on Sunday, May 23rd. Hard to place this band in any particular genre as their choice of material is very wide ranging - from Hendrix to Santana, from Teardrop Explodes to The Clash, from Nick Cave to Coldplay. But there is one common factor. Whatever the song, these guys play with real passion. This is a high quality band, make no mistake.

THE WATER'S EDGE - THE END OF LIVE MUSIC (May 2004)

First, the bad news. The Water's Edge in Poole will cease to be a live music venue on Sunday, May 30th.

THE LORD NELSON - THE RETURN OF LIVE MUSIC !!! (May 2004)

And now, the good news. Yes, The "Lord Nelson" on Poole Quay, now under new management, has just acquired its new live entertainment licence. Live bands will be playing there within the next few days, I am assured. There is no mention in the gig-guides yet so I guess we will have to check the blackboard outside the pub for the latest info.

THE REAPPEARENCE OF RONNIE MAYOR (May 2004)

On Wednesday, May 5th, Ronnie Mayor performed at The Blue Boar in Poole for about an hour, along with friends Conrad Barr and Pete Christie. Ronnie was a big name on the Bournemouth alternative music circuit at the end of the 70's and start of the 80's. Ronnie was the singer/songwriter fronting The Tours and Dabiz, to name but two of his bands. He was ahead of most other local artists at that time in bringing classic Ramone-ish power/pop/punk style songs to sleepy Bournemouth. "Foreign Girls" and "Can't Wait 'Til The Summer Comes" spring to mind immediately.

His gig on May 5th was probably his first local appearence in twenty years. He performed songs new and old, covers and originals, in a "back to the roots", unplugged style with Conrad on keyboards and Pete on percussion. It was like a breath of fresh air. And to be honest Ronnie didn't look a lot different from the way he looked twenty years ago.

DUBHEART, WHERE ARE YOU? (May 2004)

Roj Agogo cleverly managed to lose an excellent picture of Dubheart which he intended to use for a Bazuzu to Dubheart link. To view the black and white version, please click here. Does anyone have an e-mail address for Dubheart? If so please contact us.

WHO IS TOPHEAVY JAYNE ANYWAY? (May 2004)

Bournemouth bluesrockers, Renegade, seem to be generating quite a stir amongst the young ladies, judging be some of the comments on the band's message board. Drummer, Martyn, and crazy harp player, Carl, seem to be the current faves in the rock-god stakes. What am I on about? Click here and all will become clear, apart from one thing that is.
"Who is Topheavy Jayne anyway?".
I was hoping that all might be revealed when I check out retro R'n'B wildman, Wilko Johnson, who will be supported by Renegade at Mr. Kyps on Saturday, June 19th. But sadly, this gig has been postponed for personal family reasons. We naturally send our best wishes to Wilko and the boys. Wilko's previous show at Mr. Kyps was an absolute stonker. Unforgettable. Let's hope that the band is back on the road very soon. Anyway, what was I talking about? Oh, yes, Renegade. These guys are well worth checking out. Currently they are probably the most popular blues/rock band on the local circuit, so why not visit their website and discover what Jayne and the girls are raving about.
