Should I Go Alone? Should I Take A Friend?

You may feel nervous about going to view accommodation alone. This is quite understandable. Often two heads are better than one when it comes to assessing the suitability of possible future accommodation. If you intend to share with a friend or friends, then you can all go together to the viewing. However, if you are looking for accommodation for just yourself, if you are not careful, taking friends along may create confusion for the landlord or agent who is conducting the viewing. So, follow a few simple rules. When you first meet the landlord or agent, make it absolutely clear who is intending to rent the accommodation. And don't be shy. Ask the ask questions yourself. Don't let your friends ask all the questions which can be very irritating for the landlord or agent. This advice is especially important if you are viewing a room in a shared house with a resident landlord. If after the viewing you do move in, you will be living with the landlord in his home. So at the viewing, he will want to learn as much as possible about you, not your friend, so that he can assess whether you would fit well into his home.

Under no circumstances should you appoint a friend to view on your behalf.

If you come from overseas you may feel nervous about your poor command of the English language. You may feel tempted to let your friend do all the talking. Once again I must emphasise, this is not a good idea. Be brave, ask the questions yourself.

Finding your way to the viewing

Locate the accommodation that you wish to view on the map. Plan your route. Will you walk, will you cycle, will you go by car, will you use public transport? Be punctual for your appointment. Allow plenty of time. If you get lost or delayed don't just turn up late without an apology. Phone the landlord or agent and explain politely what has happened. If you are lost they may even offer you some helpful assistance.
